The Alworth scholarship is a transformational scholarship.
I am Breanne Tepler.
With the Alworth Memorial Fund.
in 1949, Marshall W. Alwroth created, the Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Fund, which is in memoriam of his parents.
But he didn't put it in his name, this wasn't about ego.
It was about service to the community.
The Alworth Memorial Fund is for students who are in their senior year of high school within a ten county region.
And that does include Saint Louis County.
Do you remember how you found out?
Was it through your brother?
Yeah.
He did most of the legwork at the beginning.
And so then I already knew about it, so I followed suit.
I think it was a great sort of start for my career, you know, not only the four years of college and, kind of pursuing a degree in, in science, but also the years ahead in medical school and residency.
It's a long road, a long trajectory.
My grandma was a nurse.
That was always inspired me to become a nurse too.
And then came back to Duluth, worked as a nurse for a little bit, and then now I am working as an RN recruiter.
We ask that students are seeking a STEM major.
So this is science, technology, engineering, math.
And that includes health care.
So we look at, where are they going?
What are they doing?
And does that align with what Mr.
Alworths wishes were.
We also look at some things like GPA and ACT score.
Last year, we awarded 91 students, and the scholarship award for each student is $24,000.
Given out over their four years.
Yeah.
Students should reach out to our office if they've got questions on eligibility.
But once they know this is a scholarship, they're going to go for, they should be on our website filling out the application, which is open until January 15th.
We were both interested in, you know, helping others from kind of an early point.
And health care was kind of a natural career for both of us.
Whenever I hear a scholar share their story, it helps to validate the work that we're doing.
