I'm at the Duluth Pottery Gallery in the Lincoln Park district of Duluth.
Right now we're having an exhibit for James Grittner, He had been the head of the art department at the University of Wisconsin in Superior for many years, and he taught there for 47 years before he retired.
He began as a painter in the 40s and was very much into that movement of, abstract landscapes and wandered into clay later in his life and then teaching and got more into, like, cino glazes, which are if you're into pottery, you know, they're a very, very simple glaze.
It's kind of brown and shiny and shows off the way the firing goes.
But then about 15 years ago, he decided to start making things that are with a painted terracotta slip surface and really making subtle layers with it, and then making more marks on top of it so that they end up looking like abstract landscapes.
And they're just beautiful.
Their colors are really subtle, but they're glowy.
He really knows how to use color, and they just they make you think of a lot of different things, like the forest or a marsh or a foggy day over the lake.
And they're very nice, This is up until the end of November.
Come on down and see it.
He's got beautiful work here.
