I'm Shawna Weaver, I'm the director of learning and engagement at Great Lakes Aquarium, and this event is part of our 11 week Wave program that we do throughout the summer.
They hear about careers.
One great example of our partnerships is what we have going on the Sea Grant.
So they're coming this week, and with Sea Grant, we get to hear all about the different projects that they have a part in.
And so what we are most proud of with this program is that we're bringing in middle and high school students without a fee.
We want STEM careers to come to life for our students, and it's really important to us that these students feel included.
Whats the name of the largest bay on Lake Huron?
I am very interested in learning about water, not only from a career standpoint, but just as I care so much about learning about it as an ecosystem.
And once I learned that it was a free opportunity, I was like, absolutely I will do that.
By the end of the summer.
They feel like they've done it.
They feel a little bit more expert in it.
I would love to work at the aquarium.
I'm already talking with like, maybe doing some volunteer opportunities.
And they've done really cool things that they might not have access to, like go sailing and go whitewater rafting and get to be in the water with researchers.
They get a taste of scuba, they get a taste of snorkeling.
These are things that, without an entry point, they may never get to experience in their lives.
