STARTING ON MONDAY, DULUTH PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND THE TRANSIT AUTHORITY ARE OFFERING FREE RIDES TO ALL HIGH SCHOOLS AND STAFF WITH A VALID ID.
THEY CAN RIDE THE DTA BUSES AT ANY TIME WHETHER IT’S FOR SCHOOL, AFTERSCHOOL EVENTS, OR EVEN WORK.
THIS PROGRAM IS FUNDED BY ONE-TIME DISTRICT FUNDS AND AIMS TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO SAFE, RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION.

I WAS A HOME BAKER.
I DID IT FOR A HOBBY.
I HAVE LOTS OF KIDS THAT PLAY HOCKEY.
SO I FIGURED, WHY DON’T I SELL COOKIES FOR FUN?
I BAKED AT HOME FOR A WHILE AND IT GOT TO BE TOO LARGE SO I NEEDED TO FIGURE OUT A NEW PLAN.
I FIRST MOVED INTO A MALL IN 2019.
IT WAS A SMALL LOCATION BUT IT WAS PERFECT.
AT THE TIME, WE GOT SHUT DOWN BY COVID.
WE GOT SHUT DOWN.
SO IT WAS GOOD BUT IT WASN’T THE SAME SINCE COVID.
THEN I DID START GETTING BUSY AGAIN.
MYSPACE WAS ONLY 500 SQUARE FEET AND I COULDN’T PRODUCE WHAT I NEEDED TO AND I COULDN’T RUN MY OWN HOURS DUE TO BEING INSIDE OF A SMALL MALL.
TRAFFIC WASN’T BIG THERE.
JUST WASN’T GETTING TO WHAT I WANTED TO DO ANYMORE.
I WANTED TO EXPAND WITH FOOD AND COFFEE.
IN 2022, I FOUND THIS LOCATION AND NOW WE’VE BEEN DOWN HERE SINCE THEN.
I’VE BEEN OPEN SINCE 2019.
LOTS OF BUMPS BUT WE ARE STILL OPEN.
SO DOWNTOWN HAS DEFINITELY GIVEN ME A REAL LOVE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES.
ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE SMALL BUSINESSES.
I KNOW THESE PEOPLE.
WE ARE SELLING COFFEE, COOKIES, HAIR SUPPLIES, JEWELRY.
CANDY STORE.
IT’S A VERY GOOD FEELING THAT WE ARE TRYING TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY WITH ALL THE THINGS THAT WE LOVE.
HONESTLY, I WORKED AS A PARAPROFESSIONAL AT THE SCHOOL.
KINDERGARTEN FOR MANY YEARS.
ME AND MY COWORKERS SARCASTICALLY CAME TOGETHER.
MY FRIEND SAID, NAME IT THE SUGAR SHACK.
SOLD.
WE ALL PUT IT IN THE BUCKET BUT THAT ONE JUST STUCK.
WE LIVE UP NORTH AND IT’S LIKE A SHACK AND IT’S COLD.
SO IT WORKED OUT.
I WOULD SAY MY OATMEAL CREAM PIES ARE VERY POPULAR.
THEY ARE REALLY LARGE.
PEOPLE GET SUPER EXCITED AND THEY SHARE THEM FOR A COUPLE DAYS.
OUR CINNAMON ROLLS ARE BAKED FRESH EVERY MORNING.
THEY LOVE THOSE.
VERY POPULAR.
THESE SCONES ARE SOMETHING NEW.
PEOPLE DO LOVE THOSE.
IT’S LIKE A COUPLE MEALS INSIDE A BOX.
WOODFIRED PIZZAS ARE POPULAR AS WELL BECAUSE WE ARE THE ONLY LOCAL PLACE IN THIS AREA THAT HAS WOODFIRED PIZZAS.
ARDO IS MADE FROM SCRATCH.
IT’S A PROCESS.
HAND MIXED.
EVERYTHING IN THE BUILDING IS FROM SCRATCH.
ALL OF THE SAUCES, RECIPES ARE FROM SCRATCH.
I’VE BEEN PROUD OF THAT.

ESTROGEN TENDS TO BE LOWER AS WE ENTER THE PARRAMATTA BUYS -- MENOPAUSE PHASE.
AS LOW AS 49.
OUR TESTOSTERONE LEVEL TENDS TO DECREASE AS WELL.
WHICH IS WHERE WE LOSE OUR MUSCLE MASS WHICH THEREFORE WE DON’T BURN AS MANY CALORIES THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
WHICH IS THEN WHEN WE SEE WEIGHT GAIN.
EDUCATING WOMEN ON THESE CHANGES OF THEIR BODY AND THEN HOW TO HAVE THAT TRIAL AND ERROR SEASON OF THEIR LIFE ON FINDING WHAT WORKS FOR THEM.

CAN EXERCISE HELP?
>> YES, IT IS A TRUE THING.
EXERCISE 100% CAN HELP.
FOR WOMEN THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE WEIGHT GAIN, UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A TRIAL AND ERROR STAGE OF THEIR LIFE.
TRYING TO FIGURE OUT EXERCISE AND NUTRITION ROUTINE THAT WORKS FOR THEM.
BUT YEAH.
JUST FIGURING OUT WHAT WORKS FOR THEM.
WHILE THEIR FRIENDS MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING THE SAME CHANGES, OUR GENETICS ARE DIFFERENT.

I’VE BEEN A PERSONAL TRAINER FOR OVER 16 YEARS.
I WORKED IN THE HOSPITAL SETTING FOR ABOUT 12 YEARS.
I WORKED WITH CARDIAC REHAB AND PHYSICAL THERAPY.
SO WHEN INDIVIDUALS WOULD GRADUATE FROM THOSE PROGRAMS, I WOULD TAKE THEM ON AND THEN PREPARE THEM FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THEIR LIFE.
AS WELL AS WORKING WITH WOMEN WITHIN THE COMMUNITY 40 AND OVER.
COVID HAPPENED.
THERE WASN’T MUCH OF A NEED FOR THE ONE-ON-ONE TRAINING, AS WE KNOW.
SO I DECIDED I’M GOING TO TRAVEL TO MY CLIENTS HOMES.
I TRAVELED TO THEIR HOMES, BUSINESSES, AND DO IT VIRTUALLY AS WELL.
SETTING THEM UP FOR SUCCESS AND COMFORT OF THE SPACE THAT THEY WOULD LIKE WITHOUT GOING INTO THE GYM.
>> THAT’S GOT TO BE NICE.
THAT’S MY BIGGEST THING.
I DON’T WANT TO GO TO THE GYM.
DON’T WANT TO BE AROUND ALL THOSE PEOPLE.
>> IT CAN BE DISCOURAGING AND INTIMIDATING TO GO INTO A GYM SETTING, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE UNAWARE OF WHAT TO DO.
YOU GO IN AND YOU SEE ALL OF THIS EQUIPMENT AND IT CAN BE VERY INTIMIDATING.
>> SO YOU ARE GOING INTO YOUR CLIENTS HOMES.
WHAT DOES A SESSION WITH YOU LOOK LIKE THAT -- THEN?
DO THEY HAVE THINGS IN THEIR HOME?
>> I ALWAYS MAKE SURE WHICHEVER EQUIPMENT THEY HAVE READILY AVAILABLE AT THEIR HOME IS WHAT WE USE.
IF YOU HAVE A YOGA MAT, GREAT.
WE WILL USE THAT.
MAYBE YOU HAVE A FULL ON GYM AND WE WILL ALSO WORK WITH THAT AS WELL.
I ALSO DO BRING EQUIPMENT WITH ME, JUST ADD THAT VARIETY WITHIN THEIR SESSION.
I ALSO MAKE SURE THAT THEY HAVE WORKOUTS AND THEY KNOW WHAT TO DO DURING THEIR TIME WITHOUT ME.
>> WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF WEIGHT TRAINING WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN’S HEALTH?

SO MANY DIFFERENT DYNAMICS WHEN IT COMES TO WEIGHT TRAINING.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE CREATING SOME KIND OF LOADBEARING EXERCISES ON NOT ONLY OUR MUSCLES BUT OUR BONES.
WEIGHT TRAINING IS ALWAYS REALLY GOOD FOR STRENGTHENING YOUR TENDONS, LIGAMENTS, JOINTS.
MAKING SURE THAT YOU ARE JUST A WELL TUNED MACHINE, BASICALLY.
REDUCING ANY KIND OF INJURY RISK WHEN YOU ARE DOING THE ACTIVITIES THAT YOU LOVE.

WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?
>> IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES.
AS WE AGE, WOMEN BEGIN TO EXPERIENCE LESS MOBILITY, LESS AGILITY, LESS ENDURANCE.
MOBILITY TRAINING REALLY CREATES THE FREEDOM AND LETTING THEM BE FEARLESS WITH THE ACTIVITIES THAT THEY CAN DO BECAUSE THEY ARE MORE MOBILE AND THEY ARE STRONG.
TO AGAIN ACHIEVE THE ACTIVITIES THAT THEY WANT TO DO EVERY DAY.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRAINING SYSTEMS THAT HAVE THOSE BIGGEST IMPACTS?
DO YOU NEED TO HAVE A BIG WORKOUT EQUIPMENT SAID IN YOUR HOUSE?
CAN YOU JUST LET THINGS AROUND THE HOUSE?
>> YEAH.
WITH WOMEN, WE DON’T ALWAYS HAVE THIS BIG FANCY EQUIPMENT SET AT HOME.
IF YOU LITERALLY JUST HAVE A YOGA MAT, WE WILL START THERE.
BUT YEAH.

WE ARE BUSY PEOPLE.
YOU MIGHT NOT ALWAYS HAVE TIME TO GET A 30 MINUTE WORKOUT IN.
LITTLE WORKOUTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY CAN ALSO ADD UP.
HOW DO YOU HELP BUSY WOMEN WHO MIGHT FIND IT TOUGH TO MAKE THAT TIME EVERY DAY?

SO MULTIPLE MANY WORKOUTS ARE EQUALLY AS BENEFICIAL AS ONE LONGER WORKOUT.
ONE OF THE BEST STRATEGIES THAT HAS WORKED WITH WOMEN THAT ARE BUSY IS CALLED THE 10 MINUTE RULE.
BASICALLY, ALLOWING YOURSELF 10 MINUTES THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
THIS IS A BUSINESS MEETING WITH YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN’T CANCEL.
SO GIVE YOURSELF THAT 10 MINUTES.
IF AFTER THAT 10 MINUTES YOU ARE FEELING BUSY AND NEED TO GET BACK TO WORK OR JUST NOT FEELING THAT ENERGY BOOST, THAT’S OK. YOU GAVE YOURSELF 10 MINUTES.
A LOT OF TIMES, WOMEN EXPERIENCE A SPIKE IN ENERGY WHERE THEY MIGHT GO ANOTHER 10 MINUTES.
ANOTHER STRATEGY THAT REALLY HELPS WOMEN IS THE BOUNCEBACK METHOD.
SO NOT TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY OR CONCERNS ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW.
BUT FOCUSING SOLELY ON TODAY.
BOUNCING BACK FROM ANY MAYBE AN IDEAL DECISIONS THAT YOU HAD MADE.
WHETHER IT WAS EATING OR YOU DIDN’T GET YOUR WORKOUT IN.
NOT TO WORRY ABOUT THAT.
BOUNCEBACK RIGHT AWAY AND GET RIGHT BACK INTO YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE.

MIDLIFE INTO SENIOR AGES.
THE CONSISTENT -- CONSISTENCY WILL BE KEY.
ALLOWING THEM TO HAVE TRIAL AND ERROR WITHIN THEIR JOURNEY AND REALLY FIND STRATEGIES THAT WORK FOR THEM.
GENETICS ARE SO DIFFERENT.
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE ARE NOT COMPARING OURSELVES.
WE ARE TO MITT -- DISMISSING THE DIET CULTURE.
WHAT WE SEE IN THE MAGAZINES AND WHEN WE SCROLL ON OUR PHONES MIGHT NOT WORK FOR YOU AND THAT’S OK. AGAIN, FINDING THAT JOURNEY THAT FITS THEM AND KEEPING THEM FOCUSED WITH THAT.

WOMEN MIGHT STILL BE IN THE WORKFORCE IN THEIR 40’S.

MOVING INTO YOUR 50’S AND 60’S, DO YOU STILL HAVE CHILDREN AT HOME?
DO YOU HAVE GRANDCHILDREN?
IN YOUR 60’S, YOU MIGHT HAVE GRANDCHILDREN NOW.
HOW CAN WE ACCOMPANY THE OLDER WOMEN 65 AND OLDER TO GET DOWN AND UP TO PLAY WITH THEIR CHILDREN?
FOR THE YOUNGER MOMS, TO BE ABLE TO GO ON A HIKE WITH THEIR CHILD AND FEEL CONFIDENT WITH THEIR BALANCE AND THEIR MOBILITY AND ENDURANCE.
>> WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST TO WAKE UP EVERY DAY AND KEEP INSPIRING OTHERS TO LIVE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE?

WHEN WOMEN MAKE A GOAL AND THEY ACCOMPLISH IT, IT IS SO AMAZING.
IT TRULY DOES INSPIRE EVERYONE AROUND THEM.
THE COMMUNITY THAT THEY ARE IN.
WOMEN REALLY NEED TO SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN.
WHEN THEY MAKE A GOAL AND THEY ACCOMPLISH IT, IT REALLY TELLS ME THAT THEY WORKED REALLY HARD AND DAVE’S STATE CONSISTENT WHICH IS THE KEY TO ANY HEALTH JOURNEY, REGARDLESS OF WHAT STAGE YOU ARE IN LIFE, IN YOUR HEALTH JOURNEY.
CONSISTENCY IS GOING TO BE KEY.

ONLY BECAUSE EVERYONE IS SO DIFFERENT.
HOWEVER, WOMEN REALLY NEED TO FOCUS ON HOW THEY ARE FEELING.
IT GOES DOWN TO, LET’S SAY YOU HAVE A HEADACHE, MAYBE YOU NEED TO GRAB A GLASS OF WATER, MAYBE YOU ARE FEELING TIGHT OR YOUR KNEES HURT.
MAYBE YOU NEED TO STRETCH FOR 10 MINUTES.
REALLY JUST FOCUSING IN ON HOW YOU FEEL.
IF YOU ARE ON THE TREADMILL AND YOUR HEART RATE IS INCREASED, YOU KNOW YOU ARE WORKING HARD.
REALLY FOCUSING IN ON HOW YOU FEEL.
TECHNOLOGY IS GREAT BUT IT’S ALSO A MACHINE AND IT DOESN’T KNOW YOU AS PERSONALLY AS YOU DO.

JUST HELP TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE’S CLIMBING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, DISCIPLINES, BACKGROUNDS, EVENTS LIKE THIS HELP US INTRODUCE THE SPORT TO ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE.
THE EVENT TODAY IS THE DULUTH ICE AND EXPLAINING FESTIVAL.
THERE ARE CLINICS GOING ON RIGHT NOW THAT PEOPLE SIGN UP FOR AHEAD OF TIME.
THERE’S ALSO OPEN CLIMBING.
ANYONE CAN SHOW UP AND WE HAVE FREE DEMO GEAR, BOOTS, ICE TOOLS, HARNESSES FOR EVERYONE TO JUST COME, SHOW UP, AND TRY OUT ICE CLIMBING FOR THE FIRST TIME.
THE LIMIT FOR YOUNG IS JUST HOW SMALL OF FEET YOU HAVE.
OUR BOOTS GO DOWN TO A 37 WHICH IS LIKE A 7.5 WOMEN.
SO THAT’S THE LIMITING FACTOR.

IF THEY ARE WILLING TO TRY, WE WILL TAKE ANY AGE.

ICE CLIMBING IS CLIMBING FROZEN WATERFALLS, TO PUT IT BROADLY.
USING CRAMPONS WHICH ARE SPIKES WE ATTACK TO OUR FEET AND THEN ICE TOOLS WHICH ARE ICE AXES THAT YOU SWING INTO THE ICE AND GO UP.
SO YEAH.
THIS ICE, ALL THE ICE YOU SEE BEHIND US WAS ACTUALLY PUT OUT BY OUR ICE FARMING SYSTEM.
IN SOME WEATHER YEARS, THERE ARE SOME NATURAL ICE THAT FORMS HERE IN THE QUARRY.
WITH A REALLY DRY FALL, WE DIDN’T GET ANY NATURAL ICE.
USING OUR ICE FARMING SYSTEM THAT WE PUT IN A FEW YEARS AGO, US BEING THE DULUTH CLIMBERS COALITION, WE CAN RUN WATER OVER THE CLIFF’S EDGE AND CREATE ALL OF THESE ICE CLIMES.
I’VE BEEN ICE CLIMBING FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS.
STARTED HERE IN THE QUARRY ACTUALLY.
SO YEAH.
IT’S FUN TO GET TO SHARE THIS EXPERIENCE WITH EVERYONE.
WHERE WARM CLOTHES FOR SURE.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT -- THIN GLOVES WITH -- FOR WHEN YOU ARE CLIMBING.
A BIG BELAY JACKET FOR WHEN YOU ARE STANDING AROUND.
BUT LIKE, IF YOU HAVE CLIMBED A TINY BIT IN A GYM, IT’S THE SAME THING.
JUST A LITTLE COLDER.
YEAH.
I GUESS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND CLIMBING AT AN INDOOR ROCK WALL WOULD BE HERE, YOU ARE CREATING YOUR HOLDS.
YOU ARE HOLDING THESE ICE TOOLS AND YOU ARE SWINGING IN AND CREATING YOUR OWN HOLDS AS YOU GO UP.
THERE IS A FUN KIND OF CREATIVE WAY THAT YOU GET UP THE WALL.
IT ACTUALLY GETS EASIER.
AS THE CLIMES GET MORE TRAFFIC AND MORE PEOPLE ARE CREATING THEIR OWN HOLDS, MORE HOLDS SHOW UP AND THEN YOU CAN JUST START TALKING.
THE HARDEST CLIMES ARE ONE THAT NO ONE HAS BEEN ON YET BECAUSE IT’S JUST A SHEER CRITICAL PIECE OF ICE THAT YOU HAVE TO SWING INTO.
I’D SAY IT IS SIMILAR TO DRIVING A NAIL IN WITH A HAMMER.
CARPENTERS ARE GOOD AT THIS.

JUST BEING UP THERE, BEING REALLY HIGH.
BEING IN THIS REALLY UNIQUE VANTAGE POINT.
KNOWING YOU GOT THERE ON YOUR OWN.

ONCE YOU FIGURE OUT THE RHYTHM, YOU KEEP THE RHYTHM GOING.
