GUEST: No, I-I don't think so.
It's, um... there's a little story that goes behind it.
APPRAISER: It's a nice looking American League ball.
GUEST: It is, it is.
And, uh, somebody signed it.
APPRAISER: "Somebody?"
GUEST: Somebody.
APPRAISER: Who might that be?
GUEST: The Babe.
APPRAISER: The Babe.
GUEST: The Babe.
APPRAISER: Ah... there's a mystery here.
GUEST: Oh, yeah.
APPRAISER: So you don't look old enough to have been around with the Babe.
GUEST: Well, thank you, I'll be sure to tell myself that.
APPRAISER (laughs) GUEST: The, um--- actually, the story behind it is we had some friends when we lived in D.C.
APPRAISER: Mm-hm.
GUEST: And Babe Ruth hit it over the stadium, over the stadium wall.
And after the game, he came over and signed it.
And from there, the friends gave it to my mother, who gave it to me, and then I just gave it to my little son, Stuart Jr.
and it's sitting on the bureau under glass, and it's-it's pretty exciting.
APPRAISER: That's great-- well, it's a lovely looking ball.
Um, I've seen a number of these balls before with this signature.
Now, you have to remember that there were a number of these balls produced.
The biggest problem in baseball balls today is that there are a lot of forged signatures.
GUEST: Right.
APPRAISER: You have to be very, very careful.
And forged signatures are worth really nothing.
So I've seen this signature.
It looks completely like an authentic signature.
It's a fabulous story.
My guess on this ball is it's probably worth somewhere in the realm of $1,000 to $2,000.
GUEST: Oh, really?
APPRAISER: Yes, it is, so I wouldn't... GUEST: (chuckling) APPRAISER: ...go playing catch in the backyard anytime soon with it.
GUEST: I'll talk to my son about that.
APPRAISER: So are you, uh, are you happy about that?
(chuckles) GUEST: I'm happy, I thought it was possibly a few hundred dollars, but it's-it's-it's really pretty exciting, and obviously, uh, we love it.
And my boy's into baseball, so he's gonna hold onto it.
APPRAISER: Where had you been keeping this before?
GUEST: Under glass on the bureau.
APPRAISER: And I guess it's going back there.
GUEST: It's going back there very carefully.
APPRAISER: (chuckles) GUEST: And get an armed escort on the way out.
